As soon as he walked into his mother’s boudoir that evening, Miles asked her. “Did you do it?”

“I did. Once I explained my requirements to Mr. Jarvis he was most accommodating. Although I wish you would not do this. You are still determined on this course?”

“I have to,” he said.

“You’ve barely known her a month.”

The reflection of their gazes met in the mirror.

“On the contrary, I knew her when she came to London three years ago. I behaved badly then, and I should have followed her. Now, I want more than to make amends. I have fought this, Mama, but there is no escape for me. I want Jenny’s second London debut to be a success. I want her to see that she is not the plain woman she supposes herself to be. Then I want—more.”

The dowager duchess heaved a deep sigh. “I know, my son. I like her, I do, but you could make her very unhappy, plunging her from one world to another. If you are set on this, you must take the greatest care of her. But please think further. Are you sure Lady Juliet would not do for you?”

“Lady Juliet?” He curled his lip. “She has a laugh that is simply unbearable. You said so yourself. And her understanding is not above schoolroom level. How long do you think she would keep me happy, despite her vaunted beauty?”

Another sigh. “I know. I will bear it, as I have borne all your starts. But do not forget to explain to her what will be expected of her.”

“I won’t, Mama.”
